Obituary for Allen "Big Al" Black

ALLEN ‘BIG AL’ BLACK

Peacefully with family by his side, Allen passed away at St. Boniface Hospital on May 6, 2023 at the age of 76 years. Remaining to cherish his memory are his loving wife of almost 46 years Elena, sons Allen (daughters Jynjer and Bela, son Carter), and James (wife Mel, sons Tye and Daxton) and daughter Colleen (husband Bryan, daughter Morgann and son Nevan), brothers Jimmy (Mary), Harold (Helen) and Doug, along with many other cousins, nieces, nephews, and friends. He is predeceased by his parents, Jim and Marie Black.

Big Al was born in Winnipeg, Manitoba, and lived in many different places growing up including Northwestern Ontario and in and around Winnipeg. He then married Elena in June of 1977 and eventually settled in East St. Paul.

Big Al came about his nickname not because of his physical stature, but because of the size of his heart. He was always the first to offer a helping hand, and treated everyone with kindness and respect. ‘Big Al’ was scribed on his snowmobile, his helmet, and even on his truck during his time employed with Forest Park Electric.

Big Al enjoyed the outdoors, even if it meant keeping himself busy in the yard at home. Throughout the years he passed along his passion for the outdoors to his children and grandchildren. Road trips, camping, snowmobiling, fishing, hunting and target shooting were some of his favourite ways to pass the time.

Our family would like to extend our appreciation to the staff of the palliative unit at St Boniface Hospital, including the palliative care nurses who conducted the home visits, for their kindness and compassionate care.

A celebration of life will be held at 1:00 p.m. on May 17, 2023 at Eastview Community Church, 315 Maxwell King Drive, East St. Paul, MB. The service will be livestreamed for those who are unable to attend at https://www.youtube.com/eastviewcommunitychurch/live

If friends so desire, donations may be made in the memory of Allen 'Big Al' Black to CancerCare Manitoba, The Alzheimer Society of Manitoba, or the Winnipeg Humane Society.
