Obituary for Anny Stein

Anna (Anny)Stein
nee Wiebe

Anny died peacefully on December 16, 2020 with her sister by her side at the Maples Personal Care Home after contracting the Covid 19 virus.

Anny lived a long life. She died three weeks short of her 97th birthday.

She was born during turbulent times in Einlage, Russia but was able to complete her high school and courses in typing and short hand. At the age of 19 She fled west during the second world war, just one of the thousands of refugees trying to escape Russia. She lived in various places during this time finding work as she could throughout Germany and Austria.

In 1946 she was baptized along with her bother Heinrich in Munich by Aeltester Heinrich Winter. In 1947 she boarded the Volendam with other Mennonite refugees and arrived in Argentina where she stayed for two years, learning Spanish while there. Eventually she moved to Paraguay for several years before immigrating to Canada in 1958. In Winnipeg she completed a Medical Secretary Course and held various jobs over the years, mostly office work. She was briefly married to Fritz Stein.

Anny was beautiful, creative, and fluent in several languages. She wrote poetry and maintained a wide correspondence through letters with many people that she had met over the years. In 1990 she suffered a stroke and her life changed forever. From then on she saw herself as a stroke survivor and never expected to live another 30 years.

She lived simply in her apartment on Oakland Ave. for many years. In June 2014 she moved into her final home The Maples Personal Care Home. Here she thrived and participated in almost all activities. We want to extend our heartfelt gratitude to the wonderful staff at the Maples. They allowed her to be herself while providing a safe, caring environment and for this we are grateful.

She is survived by her two sisters Tina Schulz and Olga Wiebe, three nieces Karen Dyck, Elsie Ginter and Irene Derksen and their families.

A private family funeral will take place December 22.
