Obituary for Barbara Apps

Barbara Apps
(nee Biggar)
1928- 2023

It is with bittersweet sadness we share the news of the passing of Barbara Apps at Donwood Manor, Winnipeg on May 10, 2023, in her 95th year.

Barbara was born in Hawick, Scotland and in the late 1950s, along with her husband Joe and daughter Edith, emigrated to Canada where a second daughter, Ruth, was born to the family. Although Barbara lived happily in a number of places in Canada she was immensely proud to be a Scottish lass to the end of her days.

Barbara was employed for many years at Molgat's Store in Ste Rose du Lac, Manitoba and the Stylerite Department Store in Dauphin, Manitoba. Barbara loved to be busy and worked tirelessly in her garden and on projects in and around her home. Fiercely independent and with an energy that we all admired she found "old age" very frustrating when it prevented her from enjoying all the activities that she loved but as she often said “I will make the best of it”.

Spry and active well into her eighties our mother adored living in her own house and it was a sad day for her when she had to leave it. We are very grateful to those friends and neighbours who were so kind to her, allowing her to remain in Dauphin for so many years. Although she missed living in Dauphin, Barbara at 90 settled into her new home - Sterling House Winnipeg and more recently Donwood Manor, Winnipeg. We are thankful for those who gave kindness, care and support so respectfully and generously in the last few years. Barbara’s comfort in Winnipeg was due in no small part to the loving care and support of Ruth, Bob, Greg and Samantha.

Barbara made friends wherever she was and always stopped for a chat - whether she knew you or not! Her heart however belonged to her family and her passing has left a huge void, she will be missed terribly. Predeceased, much too early in 1985, by her husband Joseph Apps, Barbara was the loving mother of Ruth (Bob) Sawatsky of Winnipeg and Edith (Grant) Henneberg of Calgary. Barbara was the cherished Grandma of Greg Sawatsky of Winnipeg, Samantha Sawatsky of Winnipeg, Jessica (Liam) Nixon of Lethbridge, Kate Henneberg of Calgary and the much-loved GG of Moira and Crosby Nixon of Lethbridge. Babs, one of "three beautiful daughters" was predeceased by her sisters Mamie Easton and Nan Charters and will be remembered fondly by their children and families in Scotland.

Her request for no formal funeral service has been honoured and her resting place is next to her husband at Riverside Cemetery Dauphin.

We will carry on with her not in our sight but in our heart.
