Obituary for Connie Johnson

CONNIE JOHNSON
October 15, 1931 – December 27, 2022

Connie Johnson, went to her heavenly home on Tuesday, December 27, 2022. Connie was a loving wife, mother, and grandmother who loved the Lord, her family and church.

Connie was born in Kamsack, Saskatchewan, growing up in Norquay, Saskatchewan, where she went to school and lived with her family. After graduating high school, Connie went to Briercrest Christian Academy, furthering her education at Covenant Bible College in Prince Albert. She came back home to work in her father’s hardware store for a few years before meeting the love of her life, Wesley Johnson, marrying in May 1954, at Norquay Covenant Church.

Connie became a mother in 1955 when her first daughter, Shelley, was born. After leaving the farm in Minnedosa, Connie, Wes, and Shelley briefly moved to Toronto for Wes to study radio technical services, before moving to Winnipeg and welcoming two more daughters into their lives, Kathy and Jackie. While in Winnipeg, Connie became an active member at Evangelical Covenant Church, where she served as a teacher, Ladies Aid member, and head of many special events and charity fundraisers. Connie was always eager to help and devoted her time to her community.
Connie was a devoted mother who took pride in taking care of her family and her home. She often sewed the girls’ dresses by hand, learning to sew at an early age and a hobby she enjoyed. She would later learn both knitting and crocheting, hobbies she not only loved, but was also quite gifted with, making many beautiful pieces her children and grandchildren cherish to this day.

In 1974, Connie and her family moved to Brandon, Manitoba where she continued to be involved in her church community at McDiarmid Drive Alliance Church. Here Connie and Wes set down roots for the next 47 years, building a home, and eventually a family cottage on George Lake. She built many friendships that she cared for dearly, spending time together going for coffee, walks, and endless hours on the phone sharing life. She treasured those close to her and was blessed with many who also cared deeply for her.

Once her daughters graduated school, Connie went to work for a number of childcare establishments, one being the Brandon University Daycare. Loving on the younger generation, whether her own or others’, always came naturally to Connie. She exuded a loving kindness and patience that seemed effortless. Connie always made you feel welcomed and loved the moment she met you.

It was no surprise Connie was a very involved grandma who enjoyed taking the grandkids with Wes to the lake, and welcoming them for a stay from Winnipeg for Easter, Thanksgiving, Christmas, or the favourite Brandon Winter Fair. She always made it memorable with full course meals, homemade morning waffles and double chocolate sandwiches, and fun traditions such as ringing in the New Year making ice cream sundaes.

Connie shared a love to travel with her husband Wes, taking their family on many trips throughout Canada and the US. Connie and Wes continued to travel together and with friends after their children moved out of the home, visiting Portugal, Mexico, Singapore, Bali, and many other countries.

Connie loved her family as God loves us – unconditionally. It came easily to her. Each time she saw her family she lit up and was genuinely excited to see them. She was incredibly strong, setting a wonderful example of how to live life with strength while simultaneously being incredibly gentle and loving. We thank God for the plentiful years we had with Connie, her life and lessons living through us all and the many memories shared.

Connie is predeceased by her mother, Agnes Larson, father William Larson, and siblings Glen Larson and Barb Nelson. She will be dearly missed and lovingly remembered by her husband Wes; daughters Shelley, Kathy, and Jackie; grandchildren, Shannon (Chris), Lindsay (Ian), Branton (Kayla), Jaydon, Ryan; great-grandchildren, Ben, Mackenzie, Shelby, Orlo, Olive; sisters Thelma and Therese; and numerous other relatives and friends.

The funeral service will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, January 7th, 2023 at McDiarmid Drive Alliance Church, 635 McDiarmid Drive, Brandon, MB with a light lunch to follow.

The service will be livestreamed and available at:
