Obituary for Cornelius Winter

It is with heavy hearts that the family wishes to announce the peaceful passing of our dear father, grandfather, and great-grandfather on November 21, 2022. Cornelius was predeceased by his wife Susan, his parents Agnes and Cornelius, and his brother John. He is survived by his sons, Neil (Carol) and Ron(Judy); his grandchildren Lindsay (Dan), Jordan (Laura), Logan, Wendy (Gareth), and Matthew; and his eleven great-grandchildren, as well as many nieces and nephews.

Cornelius was born to Agnes (Wieler) and Cornelius Winter on October 27, 1926 in Neuenburg, Ukraine. His father was taken away from the family and put into forced labour when Cornelius was only seven. He was returned a year later, but before pop was ten, his father was taken away once more, this time never to be seen again. So at the age of ten, Cornelius had to become the man of the house. At the age of eighteen he was forced into the German army and served in Italy. In 1948, he immigrated to Canada, where he met his dear wife Susan (Klassen) at candy counter at the downtown Eatons, whom he married in 1950. Together they raised a family, and made many happy memories, including summers spent fishing and enjoying the family cottage at Lee River.

Cornelius loved the outdoors, going on many annual hunting and fishing trips with a close group of friends and family. He spent his working years on construction as a house builder and basement contractor, and later in land development. He will forever be remembered for his love of family, kindness, generosity, and wonderful sense of humour.

We would like to thank the wonderful nurses and staff at Bethania Personal Care Home for the care and compassion they gave and showed to Pop in his later years.

A private family celebration of Cornelius’ life will be held at a later date.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made in Cornelius’ name to Cancer Care Manitoba.

Arrangements entrusted to Friends Funeral Service.
