Obituary for Douglas John Kapitany

Douglas Kapitany
January 29, 1948 – April 29, 2022

Surrounded by his loving family, Douglas Kapitany went home to be with his Saviour on April 29, 2022.

Doug will be deeply missed by Judy, his best friend and wife of 51 years; and his daughters, Michelle Bloom (Phil) and Megan Scholl (Chris). Doug leaves behind a legacy of beautiful grandchildren and great-grandchildren: Hayley (Sean), Sydney, Talia, Reese, Eden, Sayda, Elijah, Ezra, Roselie and Damian. Also left to mourn are his brothers Bob (Cheryl) and Gerry (Marilyn), many cousins and friends. Doug was predeceased by his parents Alex and Mary Kapitany.

Born in Winnipeg, Doug’s greatest childhood memories were summers spend in Ignace and Dryden, Ontario with his brothers, grandparents, uncles, aunts, and cousins. He would spend hours fishing with his family but some how he was never around when it was time to fillet the fish. As a young man, Doug’s pride and joy was his 1968 red convertible Barracuda which he held onto for the past 54 years.

Doug graduated from Silver Heights Collegiate in 1966. He received his electrician’s licence from Red River College and did his apprenticeship at McCaine Electric. He had a long career with The Winnipeg Free Press and later worked at SMS Engineering until he took up golfing full time with his best buddy, John. Chronic pain began to limit Doug’s time on the golf course and he focused on other interests. As an intellectual, Doug was an avid reader who also loved an eclectic mix of music. Doug had a quirky sense of humor and showed his love by poking fun and teasing. He enjoyed debating for the sake of debating, just to get a reaction and have a good chuckle over it. Doug did not believe in shortcuts, every project he finished was achieved with meticulous detail.

Most of all, Doug was a family man. He indulged his daughters with countless hours of fishing, tubing, and water skiing at Crow Lake in the summer during their childhood. His family knew they could count on him for anything at anytime including, but not limited to: a chauffeur service, math tutor, handy man, babysitter, driving instructor, IT guy on anything other than an Apple, and self-proclaimed “inventor of all things”. Towards the end of his life, Doug spent many hours alone with Judy playing games, watching movies, bonding over the Word of God and their mutual joy of the Lord.

The family wishes to thank CancerCare Manitoba. We also appreciate the prayers, friendship, and pastoral support offered by Doug’s cousin, Jeff and his wife Susan. They have been a tremendous encouragement over the years.
