Obituary for Elma Anne Hiebert (Krueger)

Elma Anne Hiebert (Krueger) died peacefully January 2nd at age 80 surrounded by family after a short illness in Winnipeg.

A native of Altona, Manitoba, she leaves behind Ernest, her devoted husband and partner of 58 years, daughter Michelle (Thomas Bagwell), grandson Evan Bagwell, twin sister Linda Boschmann (Dave) and older sister Elisabeth; as well as numerous nieces, nephews, relatives and friends. She was preceded in death by her parents Jacob and Elisabeth (nee Friesen) Krueger, and older brother Peter Krueger.

After getting her Home Economics degree from the University of Manitoba she and Ernest moved to the United States. There she used her many talents to work as a lab technician and then as a food manager at Purdue University while Ernest was getting his Phd. Soon after, the two settled in Gainesville, Florida where Elma spent many years raising a family and volunteering her time at her daughter’s schools and her local church, cooking meals for the youth group. In her free time she loved to sew and was an excellent seamstress who made her own clothes as well as for Michelle. Elma was also an accomplished cook, and she could always be found in the kitchen trying out new recipes from her vast collection of cookbooks she had collected over the years. After Michelle left for college Elma went back to school and obtained her nursing degree from the University of Florida, working at Shands Hospital for 17 years. After 47 years in the US she and Ernest moved back to Winnipeg for retirement, enjoying her extended family and taking frequent trips to visit her daughter and dote on her beloved grandson in Wisconsin. She also enjoyed overseas travel with visits to France, Italy, Egypt, Brazil and Poland just to name a few.

She was a faithful follower of God and had fond memories of her church in Gainesville, Trinity United Methodist, and enjoyed worshipping at her current church, Fort Garry Mennonite Fellowship.

In lieu of flowers donations may be made to Mennonite Central Committee.

The family is planning a celebration of Elma’s life at 11:00 a.m. on March 11, 2023 at Fort Garry Mennonite Fellowship Church, 150 Bayridge Ave, Winnipeg.
