Obituary for Ernie Enns

On January 28, Ernie Enns passed away peacefully into the presence of his Lord at Donwood Manor at the age of 77.

Ernie was born on April 6, 1946, the last of nine children to Nicolai and Justina (Rempel) Enns at the Old Concordia Hospital.

The family farmed at Domain, Manitoba, 20 minutes south of Winnipeg, but moved to Winnipeg in the early 60’s. He was baptized upon the confession of his faith at Elmwood MB Church in 1963. From 1965 to 1967, he attended Winkler Bible School. In July 1967, he married Louise Kliewer, whom he met in his high school years at Mennonite Brethren Collegiate Institute. They were blessed with three children: two daughters and one son.

Ernie became a Journeyman Electrician and worked at various times for Redekopp Electric, Bittner Electric, and Mennonite Brethren Bible College as Maintenance Manager.

Ernie dedicated his life to serving the Lord in many ways. He had a beautiful baritone singing voice with an exceptionally large range. He sang in many choirs during his lifetime including the O. Koshetz Choir, the Mennonite Oratorio Choir, and the choir at Elmwood MB Church. But it was his time spent with the Gospel Light Octet that was his greatest joy. The octet recorded many songs which were used on radio broadcasts that reached audiences around the world. This group also travelled to places such as Germany, Holland, Austria, France, Paraguay, and across Canada, spreading the gospel message through song. Special lifelong friendships were forged with the men of this octet and their families.

Apart from singing, Ernie’s other interests included fishing, camping, vintage cars, and jigsaw puzzles. And he could never say no to chocolate or a good bowl of ice cream!

Ernie was predeceased by his father Nicolai, and mother Justina, one brother Hal, sister-in-law Louise, and one sister Mary Pauls.

He is survived by his three children, daughter Melinda (Ross Osmun) and their children Eric and Avery; daughter Marni (Rob Enns) and their children Taylia (Austin Deleske), Megan (Sam Py) and Anika; and son Philip; as well as their mother Louise.

Also, his brothers Jake (Pat), Peter (Gerlinde), Fred (Jolyne), brother-in-law Rudy Pauls and sisters Katie Braun (Henry), Helene Teigrob (Dave) and Irene Gateson (Doug) as well as many nieces and nephews.

Special thanks to the staff at Donwood Personal Care Home for their exceptional care during dad’s residency there and especially in his final week. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Donwood Foundation, Square One World Media, Parkinson Canada or another charity of your choosing.
