Obituary for Hazel May Frost (Holmes)

Hazel May Frost (Holmes)
1928 – 2022

Peacefully on June 8th, 2022 at Gladstone Health Centre, Hazel Frost passed away at the age of 94.

Mom will be sadly missed and is survived by her daughter Marleen Wawryk from Landmark, MB; son Bob Frost from Fort MacMurray, AB; son Ron Frost (Johana) from Calgary, AB, and son Tim Frost (Joanne) from Elm Creek, MB. She is also survived by 9 grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren, as well as her brother Joe Holmes (Barb), sister-in-law Dorothy Cox and brother-in-law Jack Trent, and numerous nieces and nephews. She is predeceased by her husband Doug Frost; brothers, Stan Holmes and Art Holmes; sisters Doreen (Holmes), Isabel Jesse (Holmes) and Beth Trent (Holmes). She is also predeceased by her son-in-law Jim Wawryk.

Mom was born May 3, 1928 to Phillip and Florence Holmes in Fortier, Manitoba and at a very early age they moved to the family farm north of Oakville, MB, where she was raised. Mom studied to become a teacher and began her teaching career in Westbourne, Manitoba. After one year of teaching she relocated to Wingham school where she met and married the love of her life Doug Frost on July 7, 1951 and together they raised their 4 children on the family farm in the Wingham district.

Mom had a deep love for plants, flowers and crafts. She spent countless hours on ceramics, knitting and quilting. Throughout her life she always tried to help people who were suffering and throughout her life made in excess of 50 prayer shawls for members of the community that were suffering from cancer. She made many quilts and one very special quilt she made was donated to the local CIBC as a fundraiser for their annual run for the cure. There are so may people that have received one of mom’s knitted crafts. She knitted slippers, mittens and kittens in a basket to donate to people who appreciated her generosity. Even in her declining months she would teach grand-daughters, friends, and acquaintances how to knit.

The family would like to extend our sincere thanks to the home care staff that helped her so much in recent years, the staff of Portage General Hospital, Carman General Hospital and Gladstone Medical Centre for making mom as comfortable as possible in her final weeks.

Funeral Service will be held at 2:00 p.m. on June 20, 2022 at the Elm Creek Community Hall. A private family interment will be held.
