Obituary for Hedy Thiessen

OBITUARY OF HEDY E. THIESSEN
It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Hedy Edith Thiessen (nee Friesen) on August 21, 2022 at the Victoria General Hospital in Winnipeg at the age of 92.

Left to cherish her memory are son Larry (Esther) and 3 daughters Sharon Lefley (Mike), Lois Pettit (Richard) and Patty Procter (Jamie Hickes); grandchildren Brett Thiessen (Christine), Amy Hildebrandt (Dylan), Nevada Procter (Cory), Brody Procter (Lexee); brother Rudy Friesen (Edyth) and sisters-in-law Margaret Friesen, Margaret Funk, Lydia Voth and Agatha Dyck. Hedy was predeceased by her husband Aron Thiessen, her parents Henry and Justina Friesen, brothers Arnold (Lydia), George (Ann), Irwin (Margaret) and sister Herta (Peter Dyck).

Born on a farm near Elm Creek, Manitoba on April 1, 1930, she was the 4th of 6 children born to Henry and Justina Friesen (nee Warkentin).

Mom attended George Herbert School grades 1 to 4, Marquette Prairie School grades 5 to 8, Lord Selkirk School grade 9 and finished her grade 11 education at MBCI in Winnipeg.

In the spring of 1949, she was baptised upon her confession of faith to the Lord Jesus Christ, whom she served faithfully all her life. Mom was a faithful attender of Schoenfelder Mennonite Church.

Mom worked at the Eaton's Mail Order until her marriage to Aron Thiessen on June 13, 1953. After their marriage her focus was raising their four children. Our parents moved to the Friesen family farm in Rosser in the spring of 1972 where mom lived for 46 years until February 2018 when she moved to Lindenwood Manor in Winnipeg.
She enjoyed knitting, cross stitch, crossword puzzles, reading, and was a dedicated Winnipeg Jets fan, watching every game on TV.
Mom was quiet, generous and gentle and will be deeply missed by all who knew her. The family would like to thank the staff of 5 South at Victoria General Hospital. Their care for mom in her final days was kind and compassionate.

Funeral service will take place at 2:00 p.m. at Schoenfelder Mennonite Church, Pigeon Lake, St. Francois Xavier RM, Manitoba. In lieu of flowers Hedy requests donations be made to Mennonite Central Committee or a charity of one’s choice.

"Because of her
our own small world will never be the same,
and all our hearts are filled with love when people speak her name....
But though her face may not be seen among us here today,
her love is felt in all the hearts she changed along the way."
