Obituary for Helene Loewen (Buhler)

Helene (nee Buhler) Loewen
Jan. 5, 1936 – Sept. 18, 2023

It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of our beloved mother, Oma, Omi at St. Boniface Hospital on September 18, 2023, at the age of 87.

Helene was born in the Mennonite village of Neuendorf, Ukraine. After an idyllic early childhood as a well-loved and somewhat spoiled baby of the family, her later childhood was chaotic and involved her family fleeing their home and moving around Europe for two years as refugees during WWII. They had some stability in Ostfriesland in northern Germany, where she spent her later childhood, before moving again, this time across the ocean to Paraguay. Here she spent her teenage years helping her family homestead in the Chaco. She was baptized on May 19, 1955 and went on to become a teacher. She taught for two years before moving with her mother to Canada in 1956. They settled in North Kildonan, where she joined the youth group of North Kildonan Mennonite Church.

Helene married Albert Loewen in 1959 and they were blessed with four healthy children. She took her mothering role seriously. She was a hard-working homemaker and volunteered for years at the Westgate Thrift Shop and later at MCC. She was an active member of Springfield Heights Mennonite Church in various roles including choir and Frauenverein. She enjoyed gardening, needlework, puzzles, reading and always had something on the go.

Faith and family played a key role in her life as characterized by the many family gatherings and camping trips we had, where her grandchildren acquired so many fond memories. She tried to influence her family to see the importance of faith in life’s journey and to follow the way of the Lord.

Helene was predeceased by her husband of 52 years Albert Loewen, parents Kornelius and Maria Buhler, five brothers and two sisters. She is survived by four children, Richard (Colleen), Marlene (Dan Voth), Gary (Lolita) and Ursula (Gary Bollenbach), 13 grandchildren and 6 great-grandchildren.

We love you and will miss you always… until we meet again. Auf Wiedersehen!

Funeral to be held at Springfield Heights Mennonite Church, 570 Sharron Bay, on Friday, September 22, 2023 at 11:00 a.m. Interment at Sage Creek Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Mennonite Central Committee.
