Obituary for Henry Bergen

Henry Bergen, husband of Bettie, Dad to Braam and Myra, and Anna and Trevor, Opa to Penelope, Sebastian, Drew and Alex, passed away peacefully on Saturday February 20, 2021 after a wonderful 89 years as a good and faithful servant of his Heavenly Father. He, along with his mother, Susanna, sister Katie (Viktor), and brothers Pete and John (Shirley), all came to Canada in 1947. Sadly baby Lena and his father, Abram, died in Gnadenthal before, and as a result of, the war.

Henry dreamed of Africa from a young age. He pursued a life in Education and set off for Malawi, where he met the light of his life, his beautiful bride, Bettie. His life as a teacher spanned many years teaching in Canada, Malawi, Botswana, and China. He spearheaded a vocational school for people who were marginalized due to blindness, taught teenagers how to work through a Shakespeare passage, empowered others to pursue studies, taught English formally and informally, with kindness, a positive outlook, and humour. He had a deep faith in God, exemplified independent thinking and was not afraid to show evolutionists a different viewpoint, scientists the value in faith and the power of his God.
He never stopped learning, and in the last many years he enjoyed pursuing his creative side, turning wood, debunking Einstein (almost), cycling 1000km in 28 days (at the age of 87 and on a recycled bike to raise funds in support of Mully Children's Family), volunteering, writing his life stories and staying young by spending time with the grandkids - mostly in a swimming pool! Despite working tirelessly to have his second book be stocking stuffers for the kids this past Christmas, production took longer than expected - watch for it on a shelf near you.

He lives on in our hearts and memories. He went with God and suffered not.

The Memorial service will be Livestreamed Thursday, February 25, 2021 at 2:00 p.m.
