Obituary for Hildegard Isaak

HILDEGARD ISAAK

It is with much love and gratitude that we announce the passing of Hildegard Peters Isaak (25 Feb 1933 – 16 Mar 2023) at 90 years of age. She was a well-loved mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother, known for her tenacity, innovation, and engagement with her family, community, and God.

Hildegard grew up in the Mennonite community of North Kildonan in Winnipeg, the oldest of four children born to Jacob Peters (1907-1990) and Liese Neufeld Peters (1905-1984). She attended grade school at Lord Kitchener, graduating from Mennonite Brethren (MB) Collegiate Institute in 1951 and St. Boniface school of nursing in 1955. She then worked as a nurse for 4½ years.

Hildegard married Peter Isaak (1933-2019) in 1957. Their two sons, Jon (1960- ) and Chuck (1961- ), were the delight of her life. She took great pleasure in managing a thriving home for her three men, joining them in engaging the world with compassion, justice, and kindness.

Her Mennonite heritage and faith were very important to Hildegard. For 20+ years she taught the high-school girls’ Sunday school class, taking much delight in advocating for them, helping them to know that they were every bit as competent as the boys in the other class! A whole generation of women count her as a mentor at North Kildonan MB Church and McIvor Ave MB Church.

Predeceased by her husband of 62 years, Peter Isaak, and her great-grandson, Alex Toews, she is remembered with much love, respect, and admiration by her sons and their partners, Jon (Mary Anne Willems) and Chuck (Corinne Tiessen), and by her grandchildren and their partners, Peter (Michaela Poll), Aleah (Devyn Toews), Rianna (Benni Krauss, and daughter, Jubilee), Haley (Eusebio Raposo), and Kristofer.

The family thanks the staff at Tuxedo Villa and Donwood Manor personal care homes for their excellent care during her last months.

A funeral celebration of her life will take place at Friends Funeral Service, 2146 Main St., Winnipeg, on March 23, with viewing/reception beginning at 6:00 pm and service at 7:00 pm.
