Obituary for Ingrid Hilde Thomas (Lammering)

Ingrid Thomas
January 28, 1936 - February 16, 2023

It is with great sadness I announce the passing of my mother, Ingrid Thomas at the age of 87 on Thursday, February 16, 2023 at St. Boniface Hospital Palliative Care after a short battle with cancer.

Ingrid is mourned by her daughter Peggy. In Germany she is survived by sisters, Renate (Richard) Brands and Erika (Gustav) Schons, and brother Norbert (Bärbel) Lammering, and numerous nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her husband Alfred, parents Wilhelm and Hilde, brother Manfred Lammering and wife Mia.
Ingrid was born in Dortmund, Germany and came to Canada in 1956 to join her future husband Alfred. They were married on March 31, 1956. Daughter Peggy was born in 1959.

Together Ingrid and Alfred made many new friends in Canada, who became family. They all enjoyed many happy hours and celebrations together.

Ingrid worked for many years at Paulin Chambers, retiring in 1991 after the company moved to another province. She belonged to Trinity Lutheran Church and then later to St. Peter’s Lutheran Church. She was a long time member of the German Society of Winnipeg and enjoyed many summers at their trailer at Camp Neustadt.

Ingrid and Alfred loved to travel, having made many trips back to Germany to visit family. After retirement, they were fortunate to travel throughout Europe. They also travelled across Canada from coast to coast, with highlights taking family from Germany to the Rocky Mountains. They enjoyed a bus trip through the Maritimes and a rail trip on the Rocky Mountaineer followed by an Alaskan cruise. They also made a few car trips to the US: Virginia, Washington, DC, the Badlands and Mount Rushmore. Her favorite destination for the last 23 years was Honolulu, Hawaii. On the occasion of their 50th wedding anniversary they enjoyed a 7 day Hawaiian Island cruise. After Alfred’s passing; Peggy joined her on the yearly winter adventure, having just spent the month of November 2022 in Waikiki Beach.

Through the pandemic, a weekly gathering in Kildonan Park with friends to enjoy a picnic lunch and conversation became a highlight.

A celebration of Ingrid’s of life will take place on Tuesday, March 14, 2023 at 11:00 a.m. at St. Peter’s Lutheran Church, 65 Walnut St. with Pastor Bjoern Meinhardt officiating. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Cancer Care MB, St.Boniface Palliative Care or St. Peter’s Lutheran Church.

I sincerely wish to thank the Angels on Earth who work at St. Boniface Palliative care. Words cannot express my gratitude for the excellent and compassionate care shown to my mother.

Although I grieve her passing, her peace and the end to her suffering relieves me.

“God saw you getting tired,
When a cure was not to be,
So He closed His arms around you,
And whispered “Come to Me”,
You didn’t deserve what you went through,
So He took you home to rest,
God’s gardens must be beautiful,
For He only takes the best”
