Obituary for Irene Eva Poworoznyk (Hawryluk)

Irene Eva Poworoznyk
(NEE Hawryluk)
September 19th 1942 – September 7th 2020

It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of our Wife, Mother, Grandmother, and Great Grandmother, Irene Poworoznyk on September 7th 2020 at the age of 77 with her family by her side.
Irene is survived by her husband Peter of 58 years, along with her children; Gale Weber (Wade), Ken (Barb) and Darrell (Wanda). Her grandchildren; Amanda Dubois (Michael), Ashley Weber (Darryl), Michael (Mariella) and Melissa, her great grandchild Deacon Dubois, and
her seven siblings. She is predeceased by her parents Peter and Celia Hawryluk and two brothers.

Irene was born in Foley, MB and grew up on the family farm until around the age of 8 where Irene and her family relocated to Sandy Hook, Manitoba. Irene later began her career at the Gimli Johnson Memorial Hospital at the age of 16 where she later met Peter at the age of 19, they courted for three years before getting married on June 16, 1962; and so began a beautiful love story. Starting their family together in Gimli in 1962 before moving to Winnipeg, Manitoba in 1964 where they bought their first house together and continued to grow their family. In 1971 Irene started working for TanJay on Adelaide where she continued to work for 43 years until 2014 when she retired as she started showing signs of Dementia.

One of Irene’s favorite past times was dancing and listening to Ukrainian music, you could always see Irene and Peter at the weekend dances in the Interlake and Winnipeg Regions throughout the years, as long as there was good music and a dance floor they were there . She enjoyed spending time with family, baking, cooking, tending to her flowers, travelling, camping, going back to their roots on weekends when they would head back out to Gimli to Big Baba’s house, where home always was for them, and going to Sunday Mass at St. Nicholas Ukrainian Catholic Church where they are long time members.

The last six years have been very difficult as we watched a fun, generous, and loving wife, mother, grandmother and great grandmother withdraw from us, due to dementia. We urge anyone who knew Irene to remember her as the elegant, giving, caring, loving, and amazing wife, mother, and woman that she was.

We would like to thank the staff, nurses, Dr. Andrea Babick and Dr. Terry Babick, and volunteers at Holy Family Nursing Home on the St. Francis Ward for taking such good care of Irene. Knowing that she was so well taken care of made this journey a little more bearable.

The family requests in lieu of flowers that donations be made to The Alzheimer’s Society of Manitoba in memory of Irene.

Due to Covid-19 restriction, a private funeral service will take place by invitation only. The family thanks everyone for their understanding.

The gates of memory will never close,
We miss you more than anyone knows.
Life goes on we know that true,
But it’s not the same since we lost you
VICHNAYA PAMYAT.
