Jake Bergen
August 27/1931- February 26/2023

Jake Bergen was born on August 27, 1931 in Winkler MB to Gerhard and Justina Bergen. He had four brothers and two sisters. Dad passed away peacefully at Bethania Personal Care Home on Sunday afternoon, February 26, 2023 at the age of 91.

Dad’s was diagnosed with vascular dementia after a series of small strokes and his health steadily declined over the past three years.

Jake is survived by his son’s Gordon (Colleen), Robert (Gaylynne), five grandchildren Stephanie (Dave), Kyle (Joanne), Jeff, Todd (Amber), Troy (Lisa), seven great-grandchildren, brother Isaac (Elsie) and sisters-in-law Betty, Kathy, Nitha, and Sally.

Dad’s family initially lived in Hochfeld, MB and moved to a farm in the Elm Creek area in 1936. Dad attended school at the Wingham School. Church and faith were always important to Dad. Dad was baptized upon the confession of his faith by Bishop Buechert at the Wingham Church. In fall of 1952 Dad and his twin brother John moved to Winnipeg and attended Success Commercial College. Upon completion of his courses Dad began his working life in spring of 1953. Over the years Dad used his accounting training for roles at Murray-Branford, Boyer-Boag and Tri-Can Plumbing. Dad ended his working life as a Real Estate Agent.

On October 25, 1958 Dad married the love of his life Agatha Friesen of Arnaud, Mb. In February 1962 they welcomed their first son Gordon and in January 1964 their second son Robert was born.

The family attended Sargent Avenue Mennonite Church. Dad was involved in various roles in the church and spent numerous years as the church treasurer.

Dad loved sports. He played hockey and baseball when he was young and spent much of his adult life golfing and curling.
After 59 years of marriage Mom passed away in 2017. Dad moved to Concordia Village until his health failed and he spent his last 2 years at Bethania Personal Care Home.

We would like to thank the staff of the 500 wing at Bethania for taking care of Dad these past two years.

In lieu of flowers donations can be made to Mennonite Central Committee.
