Obituary for David Toews

J. David Toews

David Toews went home to Jesus, peacefully, on January 27, 2023 at age 75.

David was born January 3, 1948 in Morden MB, the oldest of 6 children. He grew up on the family farm where he helped with many responsibilities. David graduated from the Manitoba Institute of Technology in 1969 with a certificate in Electronic Technology. He began his career with the Bailey Meter Company in Winnipeg.

David met Carole (Klassen) in 1971 and they were married in March 1974. Stephanie was born in August 1975. In March of 1977, David began working for the University of Manitoba as an Instrumentation and Control Mechanic. David enjoyed his work at the University very much.

David was able to repair almost anything, and he took great pride in maintaining the home. His hobbies included woodworking, making many different wooden puzzles, refinishing furniture, and building wooden boxes. He also enjoyed reading, listening to the radio, and travelling to Hawaii, Alaska, and Florida. Visiting with family and friends was always important. David was a compassionate man, wise, and slow to speak, and always a gentleman. His sense of humour would reveal itself often.

David grew up attending church and made a commitment to follow Jesus early in his life. He was baptized while in his teens. David’s faith in God was very important to him and he was involved in different church committees at Westwood Community Church. Over the years, he enjoyed leading Boys Brigade and teaching Sunday School. He also served as a church Deacon and small group leader. He was musical, singing bass in the church choir, and playing harmonica with a friend. David exemplified the Fruit of the Spirit in his life and was thankful for God’s faithfulness.

David was diagnosed with Parkinson’s disease in 2001. David and Carole determined to make the best of the situation by having a positive attitude. They became involved in the Parkinson community and made many wonderful friends. In 2004, David went on long-term disability, as he could no longer manage the demands of his job safely. He had Deep Brain Stimulation surgery in 2007, which greatly improved his quality of life. He eventually made the move to Bethania Mennonite Personal Care Home in October 2021. David touched many lives during his years of illness and was a great example as he never complained.

David will always be appreciated as a loving man. He is predeceased by his parents; Jacob R Toews and Justina (Isaac); his brother Frank, and 5 siblings in infancy. He is survived by his wife Carole, daughter Stephanie Gray (Ryan), and grandchildren, Zachary and Annika; siblings, Marilyn Langeman (Ken), Robert (Elaine), Allan (Margie), Joyce Knoll (Mike) and many nieces and nephews.

The family would like to thank the staff of Bethania Mennonite Personal Care Home for their compassionate care.
A celebration of his life will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Friday, February 3, 2023 at Friends Funeral Service, 2146 Main Street, Winnipeg, with interment at Brookside Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation to Bethania Mennonite Personal Care Home.
