Obituary for Jakob Pries

Jakob Pries

On April 19, 2022, Jakob Pries passed away peacefully at the Holy Family Personal Care Home, at the age of 91 years. Jakob is survived by his wife of 64 years, Nettie Pries, his children Edmund (Joan), Gerhard (Hilda), Werner (Karen), Albert (Pam), Monika (Darren), Betty (Paul), and Anita; grandchildren Kari (Simon), Kirsten, Kayla, Adam (Nicole), Matthias (Elisa), Sarah (James), John, Philip (Erin), Paul, Benjamin, Matthew (Ameena), Michaela, Anneke (David), Anya, Thomas, Stefan, Olivia, Madeleine and Lauren; great-grandchildren Norah, Charlotte, Emily, and Peter; brother Gerhard (Tina) Pries, sisters Maria (Hans) Heinrichs, and Anna Kampen; Nettie’s brother Wilhelm (Roswitha) Dyck, sister Margarete Dyck, and sister-in-law Marlene Dyck. He is predeceased by his parents, Jacob and Agathe Pries, his mother-in-law and father-in-law, Margarete and Isaak Dyck, and his brothers-in-law Hans Kampen and Peter Dyck.

Jakob was born in 1931 in the village of Rosengart, in the Zaporizhzhia region of present-day Ukraine. The family fled Ukraine as refugees in 1943, arriving in Paraguay in 1947. Jakob and Nettie met in Paraguay and married in 1957. In 1959 they moved to Winnipeg, Canada, the city that would become their life home. Through and following the war years, the family received aid through Mennonite Central Committee – an organization to which Jakob remained committed throughout his life. Faith was important to Jakob, and he devoted himself to his involvements at Springfield Heights Mennonite Church. Through his working years in Canada, Jakob was employed at Woodland Supply, first as cabinet maker and then as manager. In his retirement, he volunteered with Habitat for Humanity.

The family would like to extend a heartfelt thanks to the staff at the Holy Family Personal Care Home. You have been a light and a gift to our father during these last years. We will be forever grateful.

In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Mennonite Central Committee.
