Obituary for James Wayne Storsley

JAMES WAYNE STORSLEY
January 14,1943 - May 21, 2023

After a prolonged illness, James (Jim) Storsley passed away on May 21, 2023 at home, and surrounded by family.

He is already greatly missed by his loving wife of 55 years, Donna, 3 children and 9 grandchildren; Leroy [Joanne]: Ava, Hannah, and Lucas; Jennifer [David Zimmer]; Brittany, Braden, and Owen; Leighton [Jamie]; Elianna, Everett, and Ewan. He is also survived by his sister Darlene [Wayne] Stefanko and two brothers Dennis and Elson [Evelyn]; sisters-in-law Sharon [Ralph] Dickinson, Lavina Rattai and Arlene Rattai. He is predeceased by his parents Nelson and Lillian [Wurch] Storsley, parents-in-law Adolph and Magdalene Rattai, brothers- and sister-in-law Al Charles Rattai, Gerald Rattai, Grace, and Abe Krahn.

Jim was a deeply devoted family man who was a dutiful husband, father, and Papa. He married Donna on August 5th, 1967 who was the love of his life through over 55 years of marriage. He took great joy in his children, and led by example in modeling generosity, commitment, work ethic, and service to others. In later years, he delighted in his role as Papa, and always had time for his grandchildren. It gave him great joy holding them as babies, playing with them as they grew up, telling many stories, and attending their activities and events as much as possible.

Music was an important part of Jim’s life. As a teenager he began playing in the church orchestra as well as violin solos at church with Donna accompanying him at the piano and later playing together in a family string quartet. More recently Jim and Donna led hymn sings and played duets at nursing homes, a ministry that he found most rewarding.

Jim learned the value of hard work growing up on his parents’ dairy farm in St. Ouens near Beausejour, Manitoba. After Grade 12, he spent 2 years helping his Dad on the farm before pursuing studies in accounting. He graduated in 1972 with an RIA/CPA designation. His first job was at the CNR office, followed by National Drugs Ltd, then the Assiniboine Credit Union. After a brief stint as a provincial auditor of credit unions he became the Provincial Registrar of Real Estate with the Manitoba Securities Commission, a job he loved for its diversity and challenges. He held that position for 30 years, retiring at age 60. Additionally, for 13 years Jim and his brother-in-law Al Rattai ran a successful accounting and auditing firm. His post-retirement career as a sales associate in the tool department at Sears was a most fulfilling time, and he greatly enjoyed having friends and acquaintances drop by for a chat as well.

Gifted with organizational skills, Jim volunteered for many years with the Gideon Bible ministry in various areas of leadership. He served on several boards including his church, the Winnipeg Youth Symphony Orchestra as well as the Calvary Place Personal Care Home.

Jim got a lot of satisfaction out of keeping his surroundings neat and organized. He was a man who made lists and once a job was started it had to be finished. He was an expert birder and loved building bird houses. He enjoyed reading biographies and books about history, politics and famous people, going to the symphony, playing his violin, singing, a walk in the woods, day trips to the country, visiting with friends, or a quiet picnic by the lake.

Above all, he was a man of integrity and deep faith in God and His Word. He will be deeply missed but “We sorrow not, even as those who have no hope” 1 Thess. 4:13. Jesus said, “I am the resurrection and the life. He who believes in me, though he were dead, yet shall he live.” John 11:25. We have every confidence that he is now in the presence of his Lord and Savior Jesus Christ.

We are deeply grateful to Dr. Peter Bialy, nurse Kija and the many health care aides who served professionally and faithfully, allowing Jim to remain at home during his illness.

If friends so wish, donations may be made to ShareWord Global [Gideons] or the Union Gospel Mission.

A celebration of his life will take place on Saturday, June 3rd, 2023 at 11:00 am at Calvary Temple, 400 Hargrave St., Winnipeg.

The service will be livestreamed, and available at: http://www.ctwinnipeg.com/
