Obituary for John Pankratz

JOHN JOHANN PANKRATZ

John Johann Pankratz passed away peacefully on February 5, 2024 at 9:30 PM. John was born on July 28, 1931 to Johann and Mary (Engbrecht) Pankratz in Truax, Saskatchewan.

In 1935, his family moved to Manitoba to farm near Justice and Brookdale. John attended Norman School until grade 9 and has many happy memories of his times and friends there as well as the Mennonite Brethren church community in which he grew up.

John eventually attended Winkler Bible School where he met Helen Dyck. They were married in 1953. Soon after, they took over the family farm from John’s father (who moved to Steinbach) and they raised six boys together.

In 1983, John, Helen and Dan moved to Winnipeg, where John began working at Donwood Manor in the maintenance department and retired from there as the maintenance supervisor in 1996. John also served on the board at Donwood from 2007 to 2010.

In 2011, John and Helen moved to Donwood EPH where he could care better for Helen. John was very diligent in looking after Helen and cared for her as best he could. Helen passed away in 2014.

John married Agnes Dyck in April of 2015 and enjoyed a warm and supportive relationship with her family. John and Agnes lived at Donwood EPH until John was moved to the PCH in January of 2024.

John is survived by 5 sons and their wives: JohnDavid (Janet), Jerry (Sandy), Wes (Lori ), James (Theresa), and Dan (Marilyn); 10 grandchildren: Tabytha, Charity (Kerry), Amy (Brian), Amanda (Chris), Adam (Debra), Matthew (Holly), Samantha (Shane), Georgia, Carson (Milena), and Tayler (Kyle); 12 great-grandchildren: Austyn, Haylee (Cole), Estrellos, Ethan T., Aidenn, Ethan P., Brooke, Owen, Bohdan, Esme, Chloe, Caitlin; and 2 great-great-grandchildren: Hanna and Cliff; and his second wife Agnes, her seven children, their spouses and families.

John was predeceased by his first wife Helen and son Harry.

Memorial service will be at McIvor Avenue ‎Mennonite Brethren Church, 200 McIvor Avenue, Winnipeg, on February 10 at 10:00 AM, with viewing prior. Luncheon to follow serve. Private interment at Glen Eden Memorial Gardens.

The family would like to extend sincere thanks to all the staff at Donwood Manor. Donwood Manor was a very big part of John’s life in Winnipeg. Donwood is where he worked, served, and lived for much of his life.
