Obituary for John Walter Krueger

JOHN W. KRUEGER
1953 - 2023

John Krueger was born in Winnipeg on July 3rd, 1953, the third child of John and Agatha Krueger, but he grew up at Dominion City, Manitoba on his parents' farm next to the Roseau River. John’s father was a pastor, so John helped out at home on the farm, already taking on a lot of responsibility early in his life. He learned the value of hard work and of being reliable; his family depended on him.

After High School, John went to Steinbach Bible College. While there, he met the love of his life, LouAnna Siemens; they were married in 1974. John and LouAnna moved to Winnipeg so John could go to plumbing school. He earned his journeyman ticket and worked with Derksen Plumbing in Winnipeg. A few years later, there was a plumbers’ strike, so John found some alternate work with a roofing company. He was like the “Wayne Gretzky” of roofing – the hardest working and fastest worker on the job sites! He worked long, hard hours to provide for his family, which by then included two daughters (Heidi and Jodi) and a son (Jeremy).

John was a visionary and a risk taker. He decided to start a new roofing company, along with a partner, Henry Siemens, under the name John Henry Roofing. A number of years later, John ventured out even further, on his own, and started John Krueger Enterprises Inc. The new business did a number things – plumbing, heating, exterior siding, eavestroughing and, eventually, also roofing. LouAnna worked in the business with John and, after the kids grew up, each one of them did as well.

John’s vision and risk taking allowed for much success as well as challenges. One summer, John and LouAnna had the opportunity to do some gold prospecting on a creek near Cranbrook, BC. It made for exciting adventures in the mountains! All of the kids and grandkids came out to visit them there, and the memories of that summer were rich indeed.

Another highlight of John’s life was the development of the family cottage on the shore of Lake of the Woods, just across the border in Ontario. Besides the actual construction, which John enjoyed very much, he and the entire family were able to spend many wonderful times at their cottage, whether it was fishing off the dock, boat rides, grandkids exploring the area on quads, or just relaxing and being together.

John had many friends, and he ejoyed many good visits over coffee at Kendel’s Restaurant. One of his close friends mentioned to John, one day, that he had heard about roof shingles being recycled in the USA. John began to do some research on the possibilities and caught a vision to begin reycling shingles here. This led to the founding of a separate company in 2009 - Greensite Recycling. Daughter Jodi and her husband Jeremy Kosman, are now operating Greensite, while daughter Heidi and her husband Andrew Herrod, along with son Jeremy Krueger and his wife Uta, have carried on with the roofing company under the name Krueger Enterprises Ltd.

Through hard work, taking risks, leading and mentoring others, and a strong faith in God, John led his family and others through the growth and development of the businesses till they have become what they are today. However, along the way, John also developed so many other personal relationships. He made everyone feel special and he enjoyed sharing his life with everyone. He would capture people’s attention and leave a lasting impression.

John was also very interested in ministries to the less fortunate. He and LouAnna often travelled to Puerto Vallarta on winter vacations, but while they were there, they did more than just sit on the beach. They heard about a ministry to people who were scavenging in the city dump, and then spent part of their vacation helping those involved in that outreach ministry. Later, John was introduced to another ministry taking place in the Dominican Republic. He was able to go down to there several times with Dominican Vision teams to work on building projects; he loved being able to make a very real and tangible difference for the people of that country.

Unfortunately, about 1 year ago, John received some difficult medical news – he had leukemia. He appreciated very much the care that he received through CancerCare Manitoba during the past 11 months. However, after a valiant battle, John’s earthly journey came to an end, peacefully, on April 10, 2023.

The last year was not easy, but John’s faith in his God remained strong. He also saw so many of his relationships deepen over these past months, and those were the greater blessings for which he was very thankful.

John now has passed on to glory, to be with His Saviour, Jesus. He also had friends and brothers-in-law in heaven who passed on before, and they will have welcomed John to his eternal home.
