Obituary for John Henry Unger

JOHN HENRY UNGER

It is with great sadness we announce the passing of John Unger on Aug 2, 2022, at St. Boniface Hospital at the age of 95.

John is lovingly remembered by his daughter Elfie (Larry), grandsons Jeremy (Virginia who is expecting) Ranson, Chesley (Kristy, and great-grandsons, Hunter and Kyle) Ranson, and Sean (Tiffany Poels) Whelan.

He was predeceased by his wife of 51 years, Wilma Unger, and his sister Henrietta Neumann. John is survived by his youngest sister Elfriede Funk.

John will also be greatly missed by his extended family and friends in North America, Germany, and Austria.
John was born in Miloradow, in what is now Ukraine, on June 6, 1927. In October 1949, John arrived in Winnipeg from Germany.

John worked in a variety of trades, eventually establishing himself as a commercial window installer. He retired at the age of 62 from Indal Wall Systems, formerly Dominion Bronze, after 38 years of dedicated service. He was a true craftsman who took great pride in his work and in helping family with carpentry projects and renovations.

John met the love of his life Wilma and they married in 1957. They welcomed their daughter Elfriede (Elfie) in 1958 after they purchased their first home in Elmwood. John loved the outdoors, hunting, fishing, boating, camping, and spending time at Grand Beach with family and friends. He enjoyed family vacations, both in Canada and abroad. John also took great interest in researching Mennonite heritage and family ancestry dating back several generations.

For John, family was everything. He was usually the first to arrive at family get togethers and proudly cheered for his great-grandsons at all their sporting events. John’s playfulness and sense of humour was conveyed through sharing stories of his younger days and even playing tag and games with his great-grandsons into his 90’s. John, or Opa, as he was known to many of us was the light of our family and will be remembered and admired for his sense of humour, strength, energy, pride, integrity, and devotion. We will miss you with all our hearts.

We are gathering to celebrate John’s life on Sept 1, 2022 at 1:00 p.m. at Friends Funeral Service, 2146 Main St., Winnipeg. The family request that guests wear a mask for the service.

The family would like to thank the staff of Pinawa and St. Boniface Hospitals, CancerCare MB, as well as the Bethania PCH for their compassion and care.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be directed to CancerCare MB or the Red Cross Ukraine Emergency Appeal.
