Obituary for Katherine Mary Wiens
It is with sadness that we said a last farewell to Katherine M. Wiens (nee Thiessen) on May 8, 2022 at Concordia Hospital. She is survived by her children James (Judy), Gerald, and Beverly (Bryan) Wilson: grandchildren Nicole (Mark), Julia, Ian, and Patrick Wiens, and Paul (Jessica) and Andrew (Brittany) Wilson and 9 great grandchildren. She is survived by sisters-in-law Edna Thiessen, Helen Rempel and brothers-in-law Rudy Wiens and Victor (Lois) Wiens.
She was predeceased by her husband Jacob K. Wiens, her parents Jacob and Katherine (Kornelson) Thiessen, siblings Jascha, Hedie (Vic) Loewen, Helen (Merv) Derksen, and Walter Thiessen, sisters-in-law Sarah (Henry) Janzen, Anne Wiens, and brothers-in-law Art (Leila) Wiens and Art Rempel., and many nieces and nephews.
Katherine was born on February 19, 1923 in Tiegenhagen, Molotschna, Southern Ukraine, the third child of Jacob J and Katherine Thiessen. She came to Canada with her family in 1926, settling in Rosthern, Saskatchewan. Her family moved to Saskatoon several years later, where she attended King Edward School and City Park Collegiate. She attended University of Saskatchewan getting a Bachelors degree in Household Sciences in 1945, along with a teaching certificate in 1948. She taught in Oliver BC, Regina, SK and Stratford ON. While in Stratford she began a long-distance romance with her future husband Jacob, marrying on July 15, 1953. They had 3 children, James, Gerald, and Beverly.
During 53 years of marriage, Mom lived in a number of cities: Saskatoon, Ames Iowa, Regina, Lusaka Zambia, and Winnipeg. Her life’s travels lead to many friendship groups, with diverse backgrounds. These moves also created a love for travel. Mom and Dad visited different parts of Africa, the Middle East, Europe, Russia and Ukraine, Central and South America, China, Taiwan along with much of North America.
Family was important to Mom. She was always interested in what her immediate family was doing. She was an excellent cook and baker. She excelled in sewing, knitting, embroidery and smocking. She enjoyed games and crossword puzzles.
She had a deep faith and was baptized by her father on June 13, 1943. She was involved in many church activities and organizations including teaching Sunday School, Women in Mission, leading Bible Studies, and helping with Mom’s Morning Out.
Mom’s energy, memory, and balance began to fail her in recent years. She kept as active as possible at Lindenwood Manor, always looking for people to visit with at mealtime. She enjoyed walking the halls with her walker for exercise, participating in singing and worship groups.
Mom passed away peacefully several days after experiencing a stroke following successful hip surgery, joining her Lord and Saviour. Thank you to all those involved in her care. A memorial service will be held on May 21, 2022 at 11:00 at Bethel Mennonite Church, 465 Stafford Street, with a viewing at 10:00 prior to the service. Masks are required. Donations may by made in Mom’s name to Canadian Mennonite University and MCC.
