Obituary for Laurie Patricia Loewen (Martens)
It is with great sadness that the family announces that Laurie Patricia Loewen (nee Martens) passed away in hospital on Tuesday, May 25, 2021.
She is lovingly remembered by her husband Abe of nearly 70 years; her children, Reynold (Sandy) and Roger (Donna), grandchildren Chad, Adam, Nicolas, Sydney, and Eric and great-grandchild Emily. She will truly be missed by all of her family and friends.
Laurie was born on March 26,1929 near Niverville Manitoba. She was the youngest of five siblings who have all predeceased her. Her life was a hard one, as farm life was hard work and money was scarce. However, she always described her childhood as fun and she enjoyed many adventures with her siblings making the best of what they had. Laurie was very close to her mom and always cherished the memories that she had of her.
The family moved to Winnipeg and resided in North Kildonan. There she meet the love of her life Abe Loewen. This was the beginning of a love story that inspired so many and will for generations to come.
As they began their life together, mom worked at Brookbond and Blue Ribbon Coffee in the accounting office while dad started his journey toward his dream career of becoming a pharmacist.
Once dad graduated, they moved to Steinbach, Manitoba, where together, they opened up a small pharmacy. It didn’t take long for mom and dad to meet new friends and know that Steinbach would be their forever home. Later, they opened a larger pharmacy in the mall where mom helped dad with the business.
In 1957, they had their first son Reynold and in 1963 they had their second son Roger. The boys were heavily involved in sports so mom made sure they got to all of their activities on time and she could always be seen in the stands cheering them on.
Family was very important to mom. She loved her sons, her grandchildren and great-grandchild deeply. She often said how proud she was of all of them.
Mom was deeply committed in her Christian faith and the church was very important to both mom and dad. Mom had a beautiful voice and would often sing with the choir in church.
Mom had an impeccable memory. She loved to tell stories about the past making sure she didn’t leave out any details. One of those stories that we all loved hearing was about the Flying Bandit where dad’s plane was stolen and used in the great gold robbery.
She was a great cook and baker and had many family and friends over for gatherings at their home. She was known for her famous grandma muffins and blueberry crisp mocha squares. She also loved to garden and always had beautiful flowers and plants.
Mom loved to crochet. She would crochet a quilt for anyone who wanted one. Mom was patient which would come in handy when she created many beautiful decoupage art pieces. She loved watching sports; especially curling and hockey.
Mom loved fashion. In her early years, she could often be seen walking from her home in Niverville to Hwy 52 all dressed up wearing a pair of high heels. Her love of fashion carried on throughout her life and she could still pull off black leather tights in her 90’s.
Mom and dad recently moved into an apartment at Bridge Park South in Steinbach. Mom met many wonderful friends at Bridge Park. She really enjoyed getting together with friends to play scrabble.
We will miss her spunk, her wittiness, and her sassy comments.
Every conversation with her had us laughing. Those who knew her were lucky to have had her in their lives and are no doubt thankful for all the love and special times that were shared.
As per Mom's wishes, cremation has taken place.
