Ich wurde als zweites Kind meinen Eltern geschenkt den 15. August 1940, im Dorf Olgino, Dnepropetrower Gebiet. Es verging ein Jahr, da brach der Krieg aus. Mein Vater, Johann Funk, wurde in den Arbeitsdienst nach dem Ural eingezogen. Im Jahre 1943 verließen wir unsere Heimat mit meiner Mutter, Margarete Funk (geborene Schapansky), und meinem ältesten Bruder, Johann, und kamen bis Polen. Zwei Jahre lebten wir da, dann ging es wieder zurück in den Wald, 500 km nördlich von Moskau. Es waren sehr schwere Jahre der Hungersnot. Gott erhielt uns alle am Leben durch die große Hungersnot. 1947 konnte mein Vater wieder zu uns kommen und so lebten wir da bis 1958, wo ich auch sieben Klassen in der Schule beendet habe. In dieser Zeit wurde noch ein Bruder, Heinrich, geboren. Da hatten wir auch die Möglichkeit immer die Versammlungen zu besuchen, und der Heiland hat auch mich zu sich gezogen. Ich wurde da auch im Fluss getauft von Prediger Abram Pankratz, den 9. September 1956, und Gott hat mich bis hierher wunderbar geführt und geholfen. 1958 zogen wir aus dem Wald nach dem blühenden Kasachstan, nach Dzhambul. Gott schenkte mir auch einen Gatten, Heinrich Fust. Den 5. Juni 1976 hatten wir eine schöne Hochzeit. Am 3. Juli 1976 durfte mein Mann auch getauft werden von Ältesten Karl Götz. In 1977 wurde uns die erste Tochter Maria geschenkt. Dann bekamen wir Erlaubnis um auszuwandern, nach Kanada, wo wir dann auch wohl erhalten ankamen den 6. April 1978 in Winnipeg bei Onkel Jasch und Tante Maria Penner. Hier in Winnipeg wurde uns in 1978 noch eine Tochter Anita geschonken. Vom 1. August 1978 durfte ich in der North Kildonan Mennoniten Gemeinde arbeiten als Aufräumerin und ich bin sehr dankbar für diese mir von Gott gegebene Arbeit. Und nach 26 Jahre meiner Arbeit fühlte ich dass ich wegen meiner Gesundheit nicht die Arbeit weiter machen konnte. Ich hatte Operation auf zwei Augen. Gott hat seinen Segen dazu gegeben. Ich bin so dankbar für alle Gebeten der Geschwister und glaube auch dass ich wieder werde gesund werden um das Gott mich brauchen kann wo immer es nötig ist.
Bis hierher hat Mama ihren Lebenslauf selber geschrieben. Ihr stand noch eine Operation den 11. Januar 2005 vor. Danach lebte sie noch glückliche und gesunde Jahre mit ihrem Mann Heinrich. Zusammen im Ruhestand hatten sie viel Freude an ihrer Familie. Sie bekamen zwei Schwiegersöhne, Andreas und Douglas, und freuten sich besonders über den Grosskindern: Sascha, Annika, Joseph, Felix, Abigail, und Elliot. Sie hatte jedes von ganzem Herzen lieb. Unsere Mama liebte auch so gerne im Garten arbeiten, ihr Fahrrad fahren, und ihren Nächsten mitzuhelfen. In den letzten Jahren litt sie an Alzheimer-Krankheit, war aber trotzdem immer Gott dankbar. Am 7. Februar 2021, ging sie Heim zu ihrem Jesus. Sie wurde von ihren Eltern, ihren Bruder Heinrich, und Schwägerin Herta Funk verstorben.

I was the second child given to my parents on August 15, 1940, in the village of Olgino, in the area of Dnepropetrovsk, Ukraine. One year after I was born, the war broke out. My father, Johann Funk, was taken to work in the Ural mountains. We left our home in 1943 with my mother, Margarete Funk (nee Schapansky), and with my older brother, Johann Funk. We reached Poland and lived there for 2 years. Then we were moved to a forest 500 km north of Moscow. Those were difficult years and we lived through several years of famine. However, God carried us through and protected us. In 1947, my father was able to join us again and we lived there until 1958, where I was able to finish grade 7 at school. During this time another brother, Heinrich was born. We were also able to attend church services there and the Lord also drew me to himself. I was baptized in the river there by Pastor Abram Pankratz on September 9, 1956. God led me and helped me up until this point. In 1958, we moved out of the forest to the flowering state of Kazakhstan to the city of Dzhambul. God also gave me a husband, Heinrich Fust. We had a beautiful wedding on June 5, 1976. A month later, my husband was also baptized by the elder Karl Goetz. In 1977, we received the gift of our first daughter Maria. Shortly after we received permission to emigrate to Canada, where we arrived in Winnipeg on April 6, 1978. We stayed with Heinrich’s Onkel Jasch and Tante Maria Penner. In Winnipeg we received another gift of a daughter, Anita, in 1978. At the beginning of August the same year, I started working as the custodian of the North Kildonan Mennonite Church and I was very thankful for this God-given work! After 26 years, I felt I couldn’t continue this work due to my health and retired. I had surgery on both eyes. God gave his blessing. I am so thankful for all the prayers of the church family and believe that I will be well again so that God can use me wherever it’s necessary.
Up to this point, Mom had written her own life story. Another surgery was planned for January 11, 2005. Afterwards she continued to live happy and healthy years together with her husband, Heinrich. Embracing retirement together, they found much joy in Family. They gained two sons-in-law, Andreas and Douglas, and were particularly happy welcome their grandchildren: Sascha, Annika, Joseph, Felix, Abigail, and Elliot. She loved each one of them with all her heart. Mom also loved gardening, riding her bike, and doing things for others. In the last years, although she suffered from Alzheimer’s disease, was always thankful to God! On February 7, 2021, she went home to be with Jesus. She was predeceased by her parents, her brother Heinrich and her sister-in-law Herta Funk.
Margarita passed away surrounded by her husband Heinrich and two daughters, Maria and Anita at Bethania Personal Care Home.
A viewing will be held on Wednesday, February 10, 2021 from 5:00 – 7:00 pm by appointment. A private funeral will be livestreamed on Thursday, February 11, 2021 at 11:30 am.
