Obituary for Mary Unrau (Wiebe)

Mary Unrau (nee Wiebe)
February 17, 1941 - December 18, 2023

Gently, and so very quietly, our Mom, Mary Unrau (nee Wiebe) passed away on the evening of December 18, 2023 at Seven Oaks General Hospital in Winnipeg, MB.

Mary leaves to mourn her passing, husband Edwin Zacharias, her daughter Kim (Kyle); grandchildren, Graham, Davis and Erin; son Robert (Verona); grandchildren, Zachary, Jared, Taya, Keagan and Javan; daughter-in-law Juanita; special nephew Greg (Dale), and granddaughter Keelin.

Mary was predeceased by her first husband Paul B. Unrau on May 14, 2007 and her son Bradley Unrau on August 6, 2008. Also predeceased by siblings & in-laws Helen Friesen, Jake (Helga) Wiebe, John Wiebe, Vic Kroeger and Jack Elias.

She leaves behind her dear siblings & in-laws; Ben (Pat) Friesen, Corny (Hilda) Wiebe, Abe (Susan), Nellie Wiebe, Aggie Kroeger, Liz Elias, Kathie Wiebe, many nieces, nephews and their families as well as numerous wonderful friends from throughout the years.

Also mourning her loss are Edwin’s children Mel & Karen Zacharias, Don & Suzanne Zacharias, Walter Harapiak and their families.

Mary Unrau (nee Wiebe) was born on Feb.17,1941, to Jacob and Agatha Wiebe (nee Derksen).

She and her family lived on the family farm in Springstein, MB. Her early education was in Ferndale, MB and then later on in Springstein School. She was baptized on the confession of her faith in the Springstein Mennonite Church and worshipped there most of her life.

Throughout her life Mary worked and volunteered in many places. While in Alberta she worked in the Medical Records Department. In Winnipeg she ran a home daycare for years and volunteered in many ways including leading Girl Guides at the local church, quilting at the Thrift Store, elder care, sewing, baking, and later in her retirement working at the South Oak Inn and taking on many roles on Bethel Place committees.

Our family would like to give thanks to the nurses and doctors at Seven Oaks General Hospital for all their wonderful care. Also a huge thanks to Dr. Wayne Poon for being an amazing and generous caregiver over the years. Big thanks to the Bethel Place community for all your friendship and support over the years.

Viewing will take place at 7:00 pm Thursday, December 21, 2023 at Friends Funeral Services, 2146 Main St., Winnipeg. A time for sharing will be provided with coffee served afterwards.

Memorial services will be held at Bethel Mennonite Church, 465 Stafford St. on Friday, December 22, 2023 at 1:00 pm.

A private family burial will be held at Springstein Cemetery prior to the service.

In lieu of flowers, if so desired, donations can be made to A Rocha Manitoba.
