Obituary

NEDZAD BRKIC

March 12, 1961 - January 25, 2021

On Monday, January 25, 2021, Nedzad Brkic, beloved father, husband, son and brother, passed away suddenly at age 59. A native of Tešanj, Bosnia, Nedzad immigrated to Canada with his wife Tatjana in the fall of 1993. They both attended Dalhousie University, graduating with their MBAs before moving to Winnipeg, which would become their home.

In 1997, Nedzad began his career in Canada at Great West Life, before moving to Credit Union Central of Manitoba, where he spent many happy years, eventually becoming Director of Planning, Research and Knowledge Transfer. He made great friends over his 20 years at CUCM and was a warm and jovial fixture at many a staff holiday party.

Nedzad was a devoted father to his daughter Adriana, active in the daycare and later school community at Ecole St Germain. He would often visit to chaperone field trips, bring his famous cheese pie to class parties, and coach students in the chess club. In later years, Nedzad coached the junior varsity basketball team at College Jeanne-Sauvé and was a great supporter of the school’s music program.

Active in his community, Nedzad was passionate about supporting new immigrants to Canada, serving on the board of the Immigrant and Refugee Community Organization of Manitoba, and also coached their youth soccer team. He was enormously proud of their success and felt deep affection for the organization and its work.

Nedzad spent his youth in Bosnia exploring the beautiful nature around Tešanj and working hard to be an excellent student. An avid comic-book reader, chess player and science fiction fan, Nedzad was popular with his classmates and a known figure in local student cafes and hangouts. He attended university in Bosnia’s capital city of Sarajevo and, in 1985 embarked on a fateful trip to Russia where he met his beloved wife of 34 years, Tatjana. Over the decades, they would raise a family and travel the world together - from sunny Tunisia to snowy Aspen and many, many voyages in between.

He had a genial and disarming character, and though some were initially intimidated by his height and “Russian accent”, he would soon win them over with a joke, a firm handshake, or a story of his many lives as a Yugoslavian, a Canadian, and a world traveller. He is survived and sorely missed, by his wife Tatjana, his daughter Adriana, his mother Adila, his sister, Nadja and his nephew Edvin. He is predeceased by his father, Muhamed.

In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation to Careertrek Inc. or IRCOM.

As a manager of a rural Manitoba Credit Union I had the pleasure of working alongside of Ned on numerous work related occasions. He truly was an great and amazing man....so unique. He set a level of humble that we should all strive to achieve. He would never pass me by at meetings or conferences without a few words, a nod, or a big smile. My regret is that I didn't get to spend more time with him. There was so much to learn from him. I will miss our conversations/debates on various local and world topics. My most sincere condolences to Ned's family
