Obituary for Nikolaus Bernhard "Nik" Froese

It is with heavy hearts that we announce the sudden passing of Nikolaus Bernhard Froese, formerly of Pinawa, on Aug 2, 2022, at his home in Winnipeg.

Nik was a kind and dedicated man. When he wasn't working, he could be found tinkering in his shop on various cars, out on the road, or visiting family or friends. Nik enjoyed many activities throughout his life, including snowmobiling, fishing, hunting, motorcycle trips, and helping those who needed a hand with anything. Nikolaus was born in Winnipeg, spent the first six years of school in the Donwood School German/English bi-lingual program.

The family enjoyed camping in the RV, especially times spent on road trips to places likes North Carolina, Oregon, BC, and the many in-betweens. As he entered grade 7, Nik and his family moved to Pinawa for his father’s Hydro job, and quickly learned to love the area, people, outdoors, and activities available in the area. He built a good group of friends, and they got up to many adventures, some of which we still haven’t heard about and may not want to! He was involved in a vibrant church youth group throughout his senior years and enjoyed snowmobiling with friends.

After high school graduation he worked for a year, and then landed a job with Manitoba Hydro in 2003. For his training, he moved to various postings around the province, including Gillam and later worked at Wuskwatim. After Nik purchased his house in West St. Paul, he soon got a placement with Hydro in the city and settled into his home.

We have heard many stories of how he helped others out with a variety of issues, sometimes with a shake of his head, but always trying his best. Nikolaus continued to enjoy road trips, some with friends to music festivals in the old RV that his Pa built, some motorcycle trips with friends, and even a few solo trips by truck or bike. He also had an ear for music, listening and playing, learning piano and some self-taught guitar.

Nikolaus encountered some health problems in the last few years of his life and had some difficult issues that he was trying to overcome. To our great sorrow, they seem to have gotten the better of him.

Nikolaus was predeceased by his grandparents Peter & Justina Froese, and Bernhard & Maria Krause. He leaves behind his parents, Willy and Martha Froese (Krause), siblings, Peter, Tessa, and Christoph, sister-in-law Carlisle (Mackie), nephew Ian and niece Heidi, along with many loving aunts, uncles, cousins and dear friends, and honorary nieces and nephews and his dog, Oso.

Memorial service will take place on Thursday, August 18, 2022 at 2:00 pm, at the Eastview Community Church; 315 Maxwell King Dr. Wpg.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Doctors Without Borders (MSF) or a charity of choice.
