Obituary for Peter Janzen

PETER JANZEN
December 11, 1929 - March 21, 2023

Peter Janzen of Winnipeg, Manitoba passed away peacefully at 93 years of age.

Peter was the youngest of five born on December 11,1929 in Schoenhorst, Ukraine. His birth came seven weeks after the death of his father Frank Janzen; a minster in the community who died of typhoid at age 29. A pivotal event occurred for the Janzen children when illness took their mother Elena's life on December 18, 1936. Peter always believed his mother would get better, but he would be raised by a caring aunt and uncle. During the war years, Peter journeyed from Ukraine/Russia, to Poland, to northern Germany, to Paraguay and finally arrived in Canada in 1953. This marked a new beginning in what had been a life of uncertainty. He married Lydia (Reimer) on August 2,1958, soon to be followed by the birth of their children Marlyn and David. He worked hard to provide for his family as a finish carpenter and took pride in his work. Peter had a quiet faith and empathy for marginalized people in the community offering work and meals where he could.

Peter will be missed by his devoted wife Lydia, his children Marlyn (Derek), David (Debra Ann) and granddaughter Isabella. He leaves behind his brothers George and Frank, many nieces and nephews, and is predeceased by his siblings Tina and Jacob.

Death will not part us, or distance divide
Forever and always you will be by our side.

The family would like to extend their thanks to the staff at Middlechurch Care Home for their kindness to Peter over the last six years.

A memorial service is being held on Monday, June 5, 2023 at 11:00AM at Friends Funeral Service, 2146 Main Street, Winnipeg.

Donations in Peter's memory may be made to Mennonite Central Committee Ukraine Relief.
