Obituary for Peter Poworoznyk

Peter Poworoznyk
July 12, 1938 – December 21, 2022

It is with heavy hearts that we announce the sudden passing of our Father, Grandfather, and Great Grandfather Peter Poworoznyk, beloved husband of the late Irene Poworoznyk, on December 21, 2022 at the age of 84 with his family by his side.

Peter is survived by his children Gale Weber (Wade), Ken (Barb) and Darrell (Wanda). His grandchildren Amanda Dubois (Michael), Ashley Weber (Darryl), Michael (Mariella), Melissa (Zach), and his great grandson Deacon Dubois. He is predeceased by his parents Michael and Katherine Poworoznyk and his wife Irene of 58 years.

Peter was born and raised on the family farm in Fraserwood until they moved to the town of Gimli around the age of 16. Before moving to Gimli, he started working with the Department of Highways. After moving to Gimli he met Irene while she was working at Gimli Johnson Memorial Hospital. They courted for three years before finally tying the knot on June 16, 1962; and so began a beautiful love story. They started their family in Gimli in 1962 before moving to Winnipeg in 1964 where they bought their life long home and continued to grow their family. He continued to work at Cowin Steel for many years and was a volunteer firefighter at the Old Kildonan Fire Department. In 1976 he started working at the Seven Oaks School Division in the welding and maintenance department until he retired in 2002. He then took up part time work at multiple funeral homes.

One of Peter’s many favorite past times was dancing and listening to Ukrainian music. You could always see Peter and Irene at the weekend dances in the Interlake and Winnipeg Regions throughout the years. As long as there was good Ukrainian music, a dance floor and a glass of whiskey, they were probably there. He was always willing to lend a helping hand, enjoyed maintaining his yard, planting his onions, camping, making sauerkraut, and spending time with his kids and grandchildren. Every weekend they would go back to Gimli to Big Baba’s house where they would gather with family and friends to play cards and horseshoes. Another thing he would enjoy doing is striking up a conversation with anyone.!?😉

Peter will be greatly missed by everyone that knew him, but it brings us all some peace knowing that Mom and Dad are finally back together. We will always remember him as the devoted husband, father and grandfather that he was. You will forever be in our hearts. We love and miss you and will live out our best lives to celebrate yours and honor you.

As per Peter’s wishes there will be a private funeral.

The gates of memory will never close,
We miss you more than anyone knows.
Life goes on we know that true,
But it’s not the same since we lost you.
