Obituary for Peter Wilms

PETER WILMS
1951-2022

It is with great sadness and heavy hearts that we announce the passing of our dear husband, father and Opa, Peter Wilms, after a courageous battle with cancer.

He died peacefully and went to be with his Lord and Saviour in the late hours of Tuesday, October 4, 2022, with his dear wife, children and extended family by his side at Victoria Hospital.

Peter was born to Peter and Katharina (Regier) Wilms on September 13, 1951, in Shestakovo, Russia and was a brother to his older sister, Irmgard.

Peter met his soulmate, Maria (Klassen), in 1976 after immigrating to Canada. They were engaged in December 1977 and were married on May 27, 1978.

They were blessed with 3 wonderful children: Amanda in 1980, Randy in 1982 and Matthew in 1986.

Peter and Maria were a team, working on many things together, especially helping Maria in her baking business. He helped transport and setup countless wedding cakes and in more recent times was a dutiful salesman for Maria’s farmer’s market venture.

Peter was a man of faith, accepting Jesus as his Lord and Saviour in November 1977 (one month before he got engaged) and was baptized on May 7, 1978 (2 weeks before he was married). He was actively involved in the various church communities that Maria and him attended, often a member of the ushering team.

Peter’s most important traits were honesty, integrity and kindness, which all contributed to him being a wise gentleman. Even when playing board or dice games he would decline the opportunity to steal from someone else. He loved telling stories, to which he always had an audience, while listening to people before forming his own opinions. Along with ushering at church his volunteer activities included maintenance, food and financial services. He held also held multiple board member roles. If Peter was asked to do something you always knew he would be there to do it.

He loved history, especially knowledgeable of the Mennonite heritage. He loved sports, reading books, sports magazines and doing Sudoku.

He loved traveling, watching soccer (Liverpool being his favourite team, which won a game on the day he died). He was very much a meat and potato guy, not a fan of any kind of vegetable.

Peter and his wife traveled quite a bit in their life, including 4 times to Ukraine, multiple times to Germany, as well as trips to Austria, Czech Republic, Switzerland, Russia, Israel, Mexico, Dominican Republic, Cuba, Arizona and Florida. The were also many family road trips over the years and the night before he could be seen studying his trusty burgundy Rand McNally Road Atlas to plot out the most efficient route.

Peter was employed for nearly 44 years at Jeld-Wen Windows and Doors (formerly Willmar Windows).
Peter enjoyed life and when asked about his life story in his final days, he said “It was good!”

Peter was predeceased by his parents and his sister. He leaves behind to cherish his memory, his wife Maria of 44 years, his daughter Amanda (Dwayne), his sons Randy (Lindsay) and Matthew (Katie) and his 2 precious grandsons, Finn and Elliot, who adored their Opa and cousins, brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law.

Funeral service for Peter Wilms will be held at The Warehouse (Riverwood), 270 Gordon Avenue Winnipeg, MB on Wednesday, October 12, 2022 at 11am.

A viewing will be held on Tuesday, October 11, 2022 from 7-8pm at Friends Funeral Service, 2146 Main Street Winnipeg, MB, and on Wednesday prior to the service.

Interment will take place following the service at the St. Vital Cemetery.

In his memory, donations can be made to “Friends of the Mennonite Centre in Ukraine”, a charity that was close to his heart.
