Obituary

ROBERT ARTHUR SCHMIDTKE

It is with deep sadness that we announce the sudden passing of our husband, father, son, brother, uncle and friend, Robert Arthur Schmidtke, at the age of 51.

Rob was predeceased by his father Horst Schmidtke.

Left to cherish his memory are: his wife Sheri, his son Riley and his daughter Cali. He will also be deeply missed by his mom Tusnelda Schmidtke, his brothers, Rudy (Barb) and Richard (Jennifer), his nieces and nephews, Derek (Katrice Kazmerik), Jessie, Christina (Mike Hopkins) and April. There are too many other family and friends to mention but we know he touched the lives of many others.

Rob loved life to the fullest, especially his time spent with family and friends at the cottage, on the rink or at the golf course. He was always trying to make those around him smile and laugh, and he always succeeded.

Rob was born on February 3, 1969, to Horst and Tusnelda Schmidtke. He grew up in East Kildonan and spent much of his time playing sports, his favourites being hockey and golf.

He graduated from the University of Manitoba with a Bachelor of Commerce degree and went to work alongside his dad at Dormond Industries. Later, his brother Richard joined the family business and the two of them worked side by side until Rob's passing.

In 1991 Rob met the love of his life Sheri and on September 4, 1993 they got married. They had Riley in 1998 and Cali in 2001.

Rob's greatest passion was his family and he always made Riley and Cali's activities a priority. No matter what Rob did or where he went, he always wanted Sheri by his side. He was honest, kind, loving and hard working. Not only was Rob an amazing husband, father, brother and son but he was a beloved role model and a man of strong faith. He has left us with such a profound loss that it is hard to find words. But we take great comfort in knowing that his last day on earth was spent at the cottage doing the things he loved. We know he has gone on to be with his dad and that he has joined the master carpenter Jesus. Until we meet you again on the streets of gold, we will cherish our memories and hold them so very dear in our hearts.

We thank God for his nephew Derek and his wife Dr. Katrice Kazmerik, and their friends, Dr. Ryan Vidal and Dr. Ingrid Baragar who were with us at the cottage when Rob passed, working tirelessly to try and save him.

Thank you to our friends, family, pastors and co-workers who have surrounded us with your thoughts, prayers and love.

Family and friends can join us virtually to celebrate Rob's life on Friday, September 4 at 11:00 a.m. on the Peace Lutheran Church Winnipeg YouTube channel or visit: peacelc.com for a link to the service.

Thank you for sharing the funeral online so we could mourn with you the loss of your dear Rob and celebrate his life.

I enjoyed getting to know Rob when your family visited in Germany, at his favourite place, the cottage and as he gave Karl and me a tour of the family business. He was quiet and humble, with a wonderful smile that lit up his face.

Condolences to Mrs. Schmidtke, Rob's brothers and their families. Sheri, Riley and Cali you are in my heart and prayers.

May the Lord comfort and strengthen you. The Lord is close to the brokenhearted.

Rob was always fun to be around and we admired him as a husband, father, son, brother, and friend. Pierre always said he was his favourite person to “razz” and did not consider many to be his close friends but Rob was one of them. Keiran said he’ll miss having Rob skate circles around him on the outdoor rinks this winter and said he was lucky to have him as a coach growing up and Riley and Cali were lucky to have him as their father. We are deeply saddened by Rob’s passing and send love and prayers to all of the Shmidtke family. May God grant you strength during this difficult time and may you feel his love shine upon you. Love from the Desbois’
