Obituary for Sherry Lynn Choptain

SHERRY LYNN CHOPTAIN
BORN: AUGUST 3, 1964
DATE OF PASSING: FEB 21, 2023

Our hearts are deeply saddened as we announce the passing of our beautiful sister, aunt, and friend Sherry Lynn Choptain who passed away at the Grace Hospital on February 21, 2023, with family by her side. Sherry, we know your pain and suffering is over.

Lovingly remembered by her brothers and sisters, Sylvia Myslicki of Calgary, Gordon Choptain (Johanna) of Dauphin, Wayne Choptain (Carmen) of Montreal, Edward Choptain (Darlene), Geri Murray (Ryan), Doris (Walter) Koop, all of Winnipeg, and many nieces and nephews.

Predeceased by her parents Frank and Katie; sisters, Florence Choptain and Tina Galay; brothers, Roger, Frank, Tony, and Larry Choptain.

Sherry was born in Gilbert Plains, MB, lived in Ethelbert and when she was two the family moved to Winnipeg. She attended Brock Corydon School, Sargent Park and R.B. Russel. Her love for music was evident, so her parents enrolled Sherry in drum lessons and of course with her talent she excelled. Sherry took to the stage at an early age as part of a family band with her sister Doris and brother Frank. Her angelic voice, talented drumming, and excellent dancing ability were just a few of her natural gifts.

Sherry was an active curler with the Winnipeg Blind Curling Club and represented Manitoba at the 1978 National Tri-Disability Games in St. John’s, NF, where the team took gold in goalball and where she also took part in several track and field events.

Born with a vision impairment and then diagnosed with MS at the age of 17, Sherry fought long and hard for over 41 years. Living with MS was not easy as it did not take long for her to be confined to a wheelchair and unable to do day-to-day tasks on her own. Sherry needed full-time care and the family had to make the difficult decision to move her into a place where personal care would be provided. Sherry moved into Luther Home in 1987, where she won the hearts of all the nurses and staff. And yes, of course she put them through their paces. Residing there for 35 years she was their longest resident. She loved going out for family visits and being a part of family gatherings. Sherry loved her family dearly and as her illness progressed, we were not able to take her home, so we celebrated birthdays and special occasions with her at Luther Home. She loved opening gifts, laughing at our jokes and she especially liked it when we brought her a Pepsi.

Sherry’s family want to thank everyone at Luther Home for taking care of our dear sister for many years. We know you will miss her smiling face almost as much as we will. We also want to thank Dr. Duff at the Grace hospital for helping the family through the difficult decisions and to the nurses and staff on the 3rd floor for providing comfort care to our dear Sherry.

A celebration of life will be held for family and close friends at 11:00 am on Friday June 23, 2023 at Friends Funeral Service, 2146 Main Street, Winnipeg.

Sherry, may your voice sing out loud and clear, your wings fly high with the angels. You are now free from pain and suffering and know we will always love you and keep you in our hearts. Rest In Peace our beautiful Sherry!
