Obituary for Steve Basil Hanchuk
STEVE HANCHUK
May 8, 1938 - November 2, 2020
It's with great sadness and heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Steve Hanchuk on November 2, 2020. He will be lovingly remembered and sadly missed by his wife of 27 years Jerrie; his son Michael (Susanne); his daughter Teri (Kelowna); his step-daughter Rebecca Schindle (Andrew); his four grandsons Levi Stevens (Kelowna), Dylan, Elliot and Wyatt Schindle; brothers and sisters-in-law and numerous nieces and nephews.
Steve was pre-deceased by his daughter Wendy (1991) and son Gregory (2013); his brother and best friend John Hanchuk (2017); his sister Elizabeth Seguin (2011).
Steve was born in Winnipeg and grew up in the Point Douglas community. During the past year of declining health due to dementia he never forgot his childhood home or how to get there. He loved to revisit the neighbourhood and the memories those visits stirred. He attended Norquay Jr. High School and St. John's High School. After working a few years with CN Rail in the dining cars he enjoyed a successful and lifelong career with Manitoba Telephone System. During his years with MTS and while raising his family Steve obtained his BA degree from the University of Manitoba, something he was very proud of. Steve retired in 1995 and enjoyed travelling with Jerrie, helping and spending time with family, making wine, curling, playing cards with friends, gardening, tinkering with electronics, cooking, and masterfully creating intriguing bowls and vases as he took up a wood turning hobby. Steve devoted considerable time volunteering with Beginning Experience (BE) and served on the international board. He also volunteered with CESO and lent his knowledge and talents assisting small businesses in foreign countries.
In early 2017 Steve was diagnosed with dementia. When it became necessary for a more focused care regime in his illness, he was placed in the Maples Personal Care Home earlier this year. He recently contracted Covid-19 when the care home had an outbreak, was transferred to the hospital and sadly passed away.
The words that keep coming up when friends and family describe him are kind, gentle, loving, dear, generous. He was all of that and more; and that's why he will not ever be forgotten and will always be loved and forever missed.
A heartfelt thanks goes out to Theresa and Howard Restall and Rebecca Schindle and family who have gone above and beyond in helping with matters pertaining to Steve's well being and to supporting the family over the past 3 years and especially during these past couple of weeks.
Cremation has taken place. A private family interment will be held at Glen Eden Memorial Gardens.
Donations in Steve's memory may be made to the Alzheimer's Society or to a charity of one's choice.
