Obituary for Terry Gross

Terence (Terry) Harold Gross
Nov. 10, 1943-May 19, 2023

It is with great sadness that we announce the peaceful passing of Terry Gross, Friday, May 19,2023 with his wife Shirley by his side.

He will be greatly missed and remembered by his wife Shirley; his children, Kimberley Fleming and Darren Gross (Alissa); his grandchildren, Kansas, Kiefer, Kendall, Elisia &Trent; his sister Barbara Warren (Gary); his sister-in-law from his first marriage, Barbara Mallard (Kevin), as well as many other family members and friends.

Terry lived a full life, caring greatly for others. He is pre-deceased by both parents, Harold Albert Gross and Ruth Ellen Gross (Sheard), his first wife Betty of 27 years and his second wife Sharon of 17 years.

Terry was born at the Women’s Pavilion and started his life in the Elmwood area of Winnipeg. In 1953, his parents purchased a lot at Falcon Lake, which became a place of many memories for him, his family and friends. Later that year, when the polio virus broke out, Terry was taken into an isolation area in the King George Hospital for over 6 weeks. It was a scary time for him as a child, being away from his parents and seeing others dying and being placed in Iron Lungs. He was later transferred to the Children’s Hospital, reunited with his family, then released from the hospital at the age of 10. He defeated the odds by learning to walk, while having lost muscle strength in his legs, and he had to relearn to swallow, even though his throat was partially paralyzed. Terry attributed his rehabilitation greatly to the care of his mom’s parents.

Terry worked with his parents in their family grocery store chain, where he met Betty Hill. They married in 1967 and shared many memories while raising their two children and living in the River Heights area. Terry and his dad built sailboats and enjoyed sailing, a pastime he also shared with his children. He provided his children with many opportunities to enjoy the outdoors and play board games, chess and cribbage.

When Terry’s parents retired in 1978, he returned to school, taking computer education at Red River College, and became one of the early IT pioneers. He worked for System Business Forms.

Terry went to church as a child and baptized his children as babies, but embraced his faith in Jesus when he was in his 30s. He and Betty began attending Grant Memorial Church and were a big part of the prayer ministry. Sadly, Betty passed away in 1994.

Terry met his second wife Sharon at Whyte Ridge Baptist Church, and married in 1998. They were involved with the church’s marriage and prayer ministries, and then, later at Church of the Rock. They bought a motor home and did a lot of travelling and spent many summers at Falcon Lake as camp hosts. Again, Terry experienced a great loss when Sharon passed away in 2015.

After Sharon passed, Terry married Shirley Friesen in 2016 with whom he shared 6 wonderful years. They also did a lot of traveling and exploring Manitoba on day trips. They were very involved at Church of the Rock in marriage ministry, prayer ministry and leading a home group.

Although Terry continued to experience chronic pain his entire life from polio, got Type 1 diabetes in 1983, and in his last days,
experienced swallowing issues and early symptoms of dementia, he remained grateful for the many experiences he had and for the 79 years he was granted. He did not complain of his ailments but demonstrated strength and courage. He often put the care of others before his own needs. He will be greatly missed by his wife and family.

Thank you to the staff of the 5E unit of the St. Boniface Hospital in Winnipeg for the wonderful care in the days preceding his passing. Thanks also to Mary and Jennine from The Key for their special care over the past few months.

John 11:25-26 (NIV) 25 Jesus said to her, “I am the resurrection and the life. The one who believes in me will live, even though they die; 26 and whoever lives by believing in me will never die. Do you believe this?”

The Celebration of Life will be held Friday, May 26 at 1:00 p.m. at Church of the Rock, 1397 Buffalo Place, with reception at 2:00 p.m., followed by the interment at 3:30 p.m. at Chapel Lawn Memorial Gardens.
