Obituary for Valerie Marie Larocque

Valerie Marie Lathlin LaRocque
Known by her friends and family as Da Boink
Valerie was born at the Women’s Hospital in Winnipeg, Manitoba, on May 30th, 1969, which is where she also passed away on November 25th, 2023.
She was predeceased by her older brother, Jerry Lathlin, in 2007, by her father, Julius Lathlin, on December 23rd, 1994, and by her firstborn son Julius in 1994, who just lived for a few months. She leaves to mourn her mother, Mary Lathlin; two sisters, Ruby Lathlin and Darlene Settee; her former husband, Mike LaRocque; their two daughters, Angelica and Samantha LaRoque, as well as numerous aunts, nieces and nephews and cousins.
Valerie was known as a fun—loving girl with a nickname for all her nieces and nephews! She loved anything to do with Harley Davidson bikes, as you will have noticed by her home-going attire!
Val was also a very gifted woman who loved anything to do with art, painting, colouring, and decorating. Family and friends often benefitted from her artistic gifts. She played on the basketball team at St. John’s High School, which won the provincials, and they went on to play in the US. But she still made time to play in the school band and played the violin and piano.
All the while, she was struggling with various health issues. She started school at age six, having to use a wheelchair because of her arthritis. At age 15 she was diagnosed with Wegener’s Granulomatosis (inflamed blood vessels that lead to damage in major organs of the body). She was hospitalized with pneumonia twenty-four times. She also went through dialysis treatment three times a week for twenty-four years! But she had an indomitable spirit and pulled through hospitalizations that the doctors often thought she would not be discharged from.
Val made a personal decision to trust Jesus Christ as her Saviour at Bible Camp when she was around ten years old. Despite wrong choices and the additional challenges of drug addiction, she always turned to God in prayer and to the Scriptures for her daily strength. Her Bible was heavily underlined, and she drew much comfort from it. She is now free and healed. “But for you who fear my name, the sun of righteousness shall rise with healing in its wings. You shall go out leaping like calves from the stall.” Malachi 4:2 That is our Val, right now!
