Obituary for Victor Robert Dyck

It is with heavy hearts we announce the passing of our dear brother Victor Robert Dyck on March 11, 2022 at the age of 63 into the arms of Jesus.

Victor was born in Winnipeg on May 7, 1958 to Wally and Nettie Dyck. He is survived by sister Melinda (Robert) Heidebrecht and brother Ronald (Irene) Dyck. He was un-cle to Steven (Melissa), Jennifer(Jay) Kathleen (Eric), Stephanie (Hydriss), Karen, Andrea (David), and Christopher (Nicole) and great uncle to Jacob, Wally, Anna, Natalie, Timothy, Clemence, Kalianna, and Weston. He has been surrounded for many years by all the staff and residents at Selkirk Mental Health Centre (most recently in the Geri Unit).

His life was difficult, being afflicted since he was 13 with an illness which manifested in rapid decrease in cognition and social skills with a second anoxic brain injury 12 years ago. After being taken off life support, he suddenly rallied and met Ron with a smile and a thumbs up.... A miracle in everyone’s eyes. After this he became more engaged with the world around him and regained some of his communication skills. We are deeply grateful for this time we had with him. During all of his life, his Mom and Dad were extremely supportive of him and he loved them dearly.

He enjoyed people and liked to be surrounded by them. He enjoyed attending the church services and we are grateful to the centre for providing for the spiritual needs of the residents. He knew residents and staff by name and would not forget a person easily and greeted them with a big smile and a wave even to his last days, whether it was the neighbour in the next room , janitors, nurses, doctors, social workers, recreation therapist, dietitian or security guards….everyone knew Victor. His humour was priceless, and he would come up with incredible little sayings that brought a smile to
everyone’s face! When he said he loved you he said it humbly and with deep sincerity. This will never be forgotten and a cherished treasure worth more than gold.

The last few years he loved the car magazines that his brother brought for his weekly visit. When he finally became palliative, Ron would visit and the 3 of us would have a wonderful FaceTime visit which had never happened before and the “dream team” was born!! It was such a special time for us of love and shared memories

Thank you, Victor, for being a dear brother whose love we will always cherish deeply. We will miss your smile but you have gone home to your heavenly Father. Victor would love to meet all of us there someday. Just follow Jesus, He will lead and show you the way. John 3:16 “For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life”

Memorial service will be held at Friends Funeral Service, 2146 Main St. Winnipeg, Manitoba on April 8, 2022,11:30 a.m., with interment at Green Acres Cemetery. The service will be livestreamed at https://fweb.tv/74965
