George Buhler

On April 5, 2021 George went home to be with the Lord he loved and served. He is reunited in heaven with his parents and many of his siblings. Left to cherish memories are his wife of nearly 50 years, Margaret, children Cynthia (Brett), Jason(Melanie) Buhler and beloved grandchildren Meguire, Jonah, Sheane and Danielle.

George was born in Mullingar, Saskatchewan on May 7, 1938 the 13th of 17 children born to John and Nettie Buhler. He grew up on a farm near Arden, Manitoba and fondly remembered hunting and trapping with his brothers. There were many hard times and sorrows but there was a marked difference in their lives after his father John became a Christian. His dad made a point of sending George to Bible school, an important step in his faith journey.

He met his wife Margaret through a church group and they married in 1971, settling in Winnipeg. They built a home in Valley Gardens where they lived until a recent move into Dawson Trails apartment. They were always a team and shared a love of sports, golfing, puzzling and fishing, even joining a league bowling team together. In their retirement they dedicated many hours to volunteering together at the Bibles for Missions Thrift Store in Winnipeg. George was quick to share reports of how many Bibles were sent to Ecuador or how many people had been saved through their efforts.

As a family there were many camping trips, times spent fishing and playing games together. George was happy to watch his children and grandchildren play sports, attend their concerts and join in with the spontaneous silliness that happened so often when they were all together.

He worked in construction the majority of his life, using these skills at home and to help his children with many home improvement projects. At the thrift store, he was able to help repair many items so they could be sold.

Good times revolved around camping with his camping group that served as an extended family, going for lunch after church with friends and a close connection to his care group. He attended Winnipeg Evangelical Free Church, enjoying the fellowship there which included time spent with Caleb’s Cru senior group. With large families on both sides there was never a shortage of people to gather with.

George had a love of nature, especially birds. His garden was important to him and when visiting his children, he would often check out their gardens before even knocking on the door. On trips, he took pictures of beautiful scenery, flowering gardens and animals.

Quick with a joke or a smile, George will be remembered as a faithful husband, supportive father, loving grandfather and a good friend.

In honour of George, donations may be made to Youth For Christ.

Viewing will be held Friday April 9, 2021. If you wish to attend, please call for an assigned time by Friday noon to Friends Funeral Service ( 204-339-5555). Memorial Service will be held on Saturday, by invitation only.
